A 96 Per Cent of Bristol School Children got One of their Preferred Schools on National Offer Day
It was National Offer Day in Bristol last week. Months of stress and tension choosing and applying for secondary school places in Bristol came to a head on 01 March when the first allocation of on time applications were given out.
A 4,900 applications were received by Bristol City Council, rising from the previous year’s figure of 4,625. In Bristol, parents and carers are given three preferences, with 96 per cent being offered a school in their top three choices.
A 72 per cent of families were offered their first choice.
Just four per cent of families did not get one of their prefered choices, having applied for places at randomly allocated schools, faith schools or for places outside of Bristol.
Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Councillor Anna Keen said: “This is another year where we have seen more children than ever before looking for places in Bristol. This is a good indication of our improving reputation as a Learning City and good evidence of the success of our work as a partnership to improve standards across the city.
“I am pleased that we have been able to offer lots of families their first choice this year. For those who still have concerns about their application, I’d encourage them to get in touch with our admissions team. With a vast increase in numbers of applications predicted for secondary schools as the city’s population continues to grow we are facing a huge challenge in order to make sure we can still provide the right places for the children of Bristol. We are currently working hard to make sure the city has the right number of places in the right areas for this increase in the future.”

We will be running a piece on how to win at the Bristol Secondary Schools Admissions System based on our own experience this year, and getting our first choice place at one of the most over subscribed schools in the city.
