Unauthorised Heritage Bristol Slave Trade Plaque
We are surrounded by so many signs in the city, that it’s easy for someone to pop up something that won’t be noticed.
This metal Unauthorised Heritage sign, blends in perfectly on a major Central Bristol building. We spotted it because it was unlikely to be on a building of any heritage interest and drew our attention.
The small sign packs a big message, naming Bristol as the Capital of the Atlantic Slave Trade and commemorates the 12,000,0000 enslaved and 6,000,000 who died in captivity.
It doesn’t further point towards an organisation or artist behind it, standing independently in its judgement of Bristol’s history.
There is a strong movement in the city, which is slowly beginning to remove the name Colston from everything in abhorrence at the actions of slave trader Edward Colston.
