Bristol Resident and Survivalist Sentenced at Bristol Crown Court for Making Homemade IEDs
Does your child have an interest in explosives? It might be time for an intervention. A Survivalist in Bristol whose prepping hobby led to an explosion was sentenced today at Bristol Crown Court.
Bedminster resident Reeco Fernadez, appeared at Bristol Crown Court today, admitting five counts of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose for which he was sentenced to three years and four months.
Emergency services called the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to Hastings Close in Bedminster on 08 September last year, after one of Reece Fernadez’s homemade improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in his bedroom.
Local residents were evacuated for several days whilst a cordon was placed around the area. It took two weeks to complete a search of the house due to the number of devices, large quantities of hydrogen peroxide and suphuric acid hidden around the home.
More than 100 homemade IEDs including grenades, pipe-bombs and arrows with explosive heads were found.
Reeco Fernadez (29) spent 18 days in hospital with substantial burns. Though Fernadez has not offered an explanation for the creation of the devices, the investigation found he had been buying explosives and chemicals off the internet for some time and was a survivalist.
Assistant Chief Constable Caroline Peters said said that during the investigation they were able to rule out any ‘sinister motive’ and found the incident ‘posed no threat to the general public.’
She said: “Reeco Fernandez is someone who is interested in impending world disasters and had for some time been making his own preparations for a major event.
“He comes from a supportive family who were aware of his interests but who viewed his activities as nothing more than a hobby.
“He has certainly paid a very hefty price for his hobby, showing a reckless disregard for his and his family’s safety and the threat his activities posed to the local community. I hope now he has learnt a significant lesson.”
