Did You Manage To Bag Your Childhood Dream Job? Few Of Us Do

Despite constant messages to aim for your dreams, few people manage to bag the job they always dreamed of having.

According to a poll of 2000 adults by Simba, less than one in ten people managed to work in the profession they dreamed of as a child.

But some of us don’t give up easily. Findings also showed that seven in ten were determined to keep hold of their childhood aspirations.

Retirement appears to be the time when one third will have another crack at making it.

“Naturally it’s easy to look at the results of this study from a glum perspective, but on the flip side it does show we’re a glass half full nation, even in the face of reality,” says Hope Bastine, the psychologist working with Simba.

“When we are younger the world can seem full of endless possibilities, and we are encouraged to shoot for the moon, but soon certain realities begin to set in.

“When this happens, it is encouraging to see many of us still receive the support we need from friends and family to follow our dreams, even as life complicates matters.”

As well as arriving at pension age, hitting hard times was another driving force to re-evaluate life and finally take the plunge towards the dream career change for one in two people.

Of course, it usually comes down to money and finance, which was the biggest wedge for the 55 per cent who worried about the practical implications.

The ten most popular career dreams and aspirations were found to be:

1. Footballer
2. Musician
3. Teacher
4. Vet
5. Writer
6. Pilot
7. Actor
8. Dancer
9. Doctor
10. Police officer
11. Archaeologist
12. Train driver
13. Scientist
14. Artist
15. Spy
16. Astronaut
17. Athlete
18. Journalist
19. Firefighter
20. Lawyer
