Photographs of Pre-NHS Bristol Hospitals In New Historic England Online Resource
Photographs of Bristol Hospitals Pre-NHS: Fascinating collection from Historic England digital archive
Photographs of Bristol hospitals and their treatments in the past, feature in a new digitised collection by Historic England.
More than 2000 black and white medical archive photographs from a discovery of over 4000, can be viewed online and give a fascinating and sometimes frighting insight into healthcare between 1938 and 1943 in the city and beyond.
Grant funding from the Wellcome Trust, allowed the photographs originally taken by the Topical Press Agency, to finally be accessible after a year long project.
The collection is being made publicly available for the first time, to celebrate 70 years of the National Health Service.
The photographs are accompanied by a description and background information.
Archive Cataloguing Officer at Historic England, Abigail Coats said: “Working with this collection everyday has been fascinating and a real joy. The photographs reveal health and welfare provision at a time of social upheaval and change. You can see just how far some medical developments have come, but also what has stayed largely unchanged. I’m very proud to be a part of bringing this unique collection back to life and that we’re able to share this fantastic resource with the public.”
The collection can be viewed at HistoricEngland.org.uk/medical
