Cotham School Ofsted Report Judges School to be Good
Ofsted Report for Cotham School: Highly regarded Cotham School in Bristol, has been judged as good in all categories, after it was assessed by Ofsted in April.
The school, which was previously rated as outstanding, was lauded by inspectors for its approach to maths, having specialist teachers and excellent Send provision.
Inspectors wrote of maths that ‘disadvantaged pupils make better progress than other pupils across the country’.
Pupils with additional needs or Send were found to ‘receive the support they require to make good progress. Leaders make sure that teachers are fully aware of each pupil’s needs. Leaders expect that teachers will meet the needs of every pupil and provide support in order for this to occur.’
It was noted that some teaching was weaker and did not set high enough expectations, leading pupils not make enough progress.
But essentially, pupils were found to treat each other well and were well supported by the school. School pupils said that there was bullying occasionally but that ‘it is dealt with well by staff’. Inspectors also found the school which borders some of the most diverse areas of Bristol to be tolerant of beliefs and backgrounds with pupils saying ‘there is no place for racism or homophobia in their school.’
Cotham School headteacher Jo Butler says: ‘We’re proud of the richness of our school community, its cultural diversity and of the successes achieved by our students over many years. However, we’re never complacent and are always seeking ways to improve outcomes for all our students. We’re therefore pleased that the school improvement journey we started a few years ago has been recognised by the inspection team through their visit and report.
The school has been graded ‘Good’ in all categories, and we are especially delighted with the many incredibly positive observations made by the inspection team about our staff and students. Strong relationships between students and staff are valued features of Cotham and rest assured staff will continue to strive to ensure the best possible school experience, achievement and outcomes for every student who studies here.’
