Fire Doors in Flats that Fail 30 Minutes of Fire Resistance Poses ‘Low Risk’ Housing Secretary Says
Fire Door Failure Risk ‘Low’: Fire doors installed in flats across the country which fail to meet recommended burn times are only putting residents at ‘low risk’ according to a government investigation.
Housing Secretary James Brokenshire, told parliament yesterday that doors manufactured by Manse Masterdor – a company that ceased trading in 2014 – did not meet necessary requirements.
Their fire doors – which were also installed in Grenfell Tower – should have thirty minute fire resistance according to building regulations guidance.
But earlier this year, Metropolitan Police found that a fire door installed at Grenfell only resisted fire for 15 minutes, half the time it should have done.
The National Fire Chiefs Council advised the investigation saying that that while the risk is low, all buildings affected by the fire doors need to review their fire risk assessment, including ‘how quickly these doors should be replaced’.
Fire protection in a building should use a range of methods so should one fail, it ‘should not significantly change the overall safety of residents’ they say. They also state that ‘all doors provide essential protection’ as long as they are properly closed.
Former customers identified through Manse Masterdor records will be informed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Worried tenants who are concerned about fire doors in their building should contact their landlord.
Because of the findings, there will be tests on fire doors from other suppliers.
Housing Secretary Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP said: “Based on the results of these investigations to date, the expert panel advise the risk to public safety remains low. However they advise there is a performance issue with Manse Masterdor which is why we are taking the responsible step of writing to relevant building owners setting out clear advice on what they should do.”
