‘Workable’ Ideas Needed For Bristol Libraries Marvin Rees Says

Bristol libraries are on the agenda at Cabinet next week, with mayor Marvin Rees looking for ‘workable’ ideas to modernise the service.

Early this year, Bristol’s library services were on the hit list as part of a £1.4M budget saving.

After public campaigns to keep the libraries open, the Mayor and Cabinet decided in July to retain all 27 Bristol libraries.

The libraries remain open whilst a strategy takes place, something that Cabinet will be asked to approve. During this, communities for each library will need to come forward with ideas and solutions to make the service ‘sustainable’.

The development of the library strategy would start next month, with a report in spring 2019 if Cabinet approve. Information about how people can become involved in the engagement process will then become available.

Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: “We understand how much people care about their libraries, and we took that in to consideration when we decided not to close any branches earlier this summer.

“We understand that work needs to be done to modernise the library service, and if cabinet agrees to develop a strategy we can begin to plan for the future.

“Libraries are vital to local communities, and we want to use this opportunity to explore how we can work with local communities to make these spaces more appealing and tailor them to fit the needs of the local area.

“We are going to be looking for people to come forward with workable ideas for their local library –we are open to discussing new ideas and are keen not to stand in people’s way.”
