Parent Guidance for Children and Social Media is Coming Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Says
The impact of social media on children’s mental health, is something being reviewed by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Professor Dame Sally Davies.
The announcement was made by Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock today, who has issued an ‘urgent’ warning on a threat he says is ‘similar’ to sugar on physical health.
Guidance is being drawn up to help parents which will include the age a child should be allowed to sign up to social media platforms, the amount of access they should have and related problems including cyberbullying, online gaming and internet addiction.
“Overwhelmingly technology is a force for good, but we are seeing more and more evidence that children using social media sites for hours on end each day is having a detrimental impact on their mental health,” Matt Hancock said.
“I want to empower parents to keep their children safe in the digital age which is why I’ve asked the Chief Medical Officer to draw up helpful guidance to allow them to make an informed choice.”
