New Workplace Law for Bereaved Parents and Carers
Law for Bereaved Parents and Carers:
A new workplace right will come into operation next year, supporting families affected by the death of a child.
Parents and carers will be able to take immediate leave after a loss and will not need to supply a copy of the death certificate as evidence. The leave will allow immediate leave for two weeks and can be taken either in 1 block or as 2 separate blocks of 1 week.
The law aims to support employees with children aged under 18, giving them the space they need to grieve.
The requirements for the Parental Bereavement (Pay and Leave) Act are being expanded to include all primary carers for children, including adopters, foster parents and guardians.
“We are very pleased that the government has listened to bereaved families and responded to their concerns in paving the way for the implementation of the new Act,” Francine Bates, Chief Executive of The Lullaby Trust said.
“Losing a baby or child is a devastating experience for all the family and extending the provisions of the act to adopters, foster carers, guardians and kinship carers is very important. Offering time and flexibility to bereaved families at a time that best suits them is also crucial in supporting them through their journey.”
