Bristol gets a service director to sort out dire transport system

A former assistant head of transport at Oxfordshire County Council has been appointed the unenviable task of trying to sort out the Bristol transport system.

Peter Mann will take on the new role, service director for transport in January 2010.

Peter Mann said: “UK cities look at Bristol as a national leader on sustainability and environmental technology, and as a city with a big economy that needs to improve its transport infrastructure to support its growing success. I was impressed by the sense of a city that knows what it wants to achieve. I have met a strong team of professionals and a close and committed senior leadership team of councillors and officers who are clearly committed to their responsibilities. I am looking forward to starting work.”

Cutting congestion, better public transport, sustainable travel and a better infrastructure will be the impossible task awaiting Peter next year.
