Parents should adhere to game age restrictions

Children will be clamouring for video games this Christmas, but games firm Capcom is urging parents to adhere to age restrictions.

Three British clergymen, Bishop Bryant of Jarrow, Bishop of Burnley, Rt Rev John Goddard and Archdeacon Brian Smith recently condemned the glamourising of violence and promoting the occult in Capcom’s popular Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Defending the game, spokesperson for Capcom, Leo Tan blasted the scaremongering and ‘typical religious hysteria.’

He said: “Video games are entertainment and like horror movies or other scary films they are covered by a ratings system.

“Resident Evil for example is a 15 and not suitable for anyone under that age. Parents have to be trusted to adhere to these age restrictions and use common sense. Video games cannot be blamed for society’s ills but we understand the concerns, it’s just that they are unfounded and using video games as a bit of a scapegoat.”
