British Dance Council excludes boys on UK initiative to get children dancing

Dance schools in Bristol, primarily ballroom dance ones, will be taking part in a special nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging more children to take up dancing.

Whilst boys still continue to be the minority numbers in dance classes, the Disney Princess Dance campaign, apparently aimed at all children aged 3 – 6, will teach little ones a routine to inspire a love of dance.

The dance choreography has been put together by dancer Lorraine Drolet and the moves are inspired by the Disney Princesses.

Class participants will receive a Disney Princess Pack including instructions on how to perform the moves.

More than 1500 dance schools around the UK will be taking part, including five in Bristol.

The British Dance Council is supporting the initiative and celebrity Sinitta is heading up the campaign.

Cementing the obvious exclusion of boys in this exercise, Sinitta said: “The Disney Princess characters really bring to together what young girls love – imagination, dress up and of course fairy tales.  I speak from first-hand experience as my daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan! As I’ve done plenty of dancing over the years myself I’m pleased to be supporting the Disney Princess Dance campaign and encouraging children across the country to get dancing.”
