Youngsters own mobile phones instead of books
Youngsters are opting for the entertainment of mobile phones above the joy of reading.
Research from the National Literacy Trust (NLT) finds that 86 per cent of young people own a mobile phone, whilst only 73 per cent have their own books.
Of the children who owned their own books, 80 per cent read well above the expectations of their age group.
The research comes as the NLT have launched a new campaign Tell Me A Story, aiming to get young people reading with family support.
Director of the National Literacy Trust Jonathan Douglas says:“Our research illustrates the clear link with literacy resources at home and a child’s reading ability. By ensuring children have access to reading materials in the home families can help them to do well at school and to enjoy opportunities throughout their life.”
