Mums in Business: Stephanie Stork Lawn Signs
For mumprenuer Stephanie Roberts, the stork didn’t just bring her three beautiful children, but the basis for a rather unique business.
Like many mums, Stephanie gave up a career due to the cost of having three children all under the age of three years in childcare.
If staying at home to look after her children wasn’t a full time job in itself, Stephanie decided to keep her brain going and start earning money by launching her own business.
The result of this is Stephanie Stork Lawn Signs, a new product she designed and created which cannot be purchased anywhere else.
The storks are birth announcement signs new parents can pop outside their house once the baby has arrived.
Simply writing the baby’s name, date of birth and weight on to the stork, the sign informs friends in the community that your new arrival has turned up.
They also serves as a warning to door step callers that persistent ringing on the doorbell may bring with it a tired, angry mother and screaming, freshly woken baby.
Managing to juggle the initial set up of the business in the evening after her children had gone to bed, Stephanie found herself persevering through a day’s work just at the time she most wanted a break.
“My one and two-year-olds still have a two hour afternoon sleep and my three year old has three two and a half hour sessions at pre-school a week so I just squeeze in working when I can,” Stephanie explains.
Reassuringly for mums thinking about making their own leap from stay-at-home mum to work-from-home mum, Stephanie’s final words are reassuring. “It isn’t easy and I do seem to be constantly doing things,” she says.
“However, it is nice to keep my brain active and be able to be with my children in the day. At present I still have a lot of time with my family however, the business it still new and I guess as it grows this may change however, I am still hopeful that I can do a lot of the work in the evenings.”
