Children see benefits in getting a job
UK Children are keen to get to work believing that securing a part time job during their teens will help them get ahead.
A survey of 3,131 children aged 8 to 18, revealed that up to 87 per cent could see benefits in part time work.
According to the M&S Money Under-18s’ Work and Money Survey 2010, children felt it would give them valuable work and money management experience.
Whilst the aim to work is high, 55 per cent of 16-18 year olds have tried to get part time work in the last six months but failed due to the competitiveness within the current job market.
Currently, 42 per cent of 8-14 year olds are given cash by their parents without having to earn it.
But, many do have to work for their money with chores, odd jobs and washing the car as the main earners.
M&S spokesperson Amanda Newman, said:“We are impressed to see that 80% of today’s Tweens and teens are keen to earn their own money and get a part-time job before they turn 18 years old. While focus on academic success is important, a part-time job can teach young people important life skills such as how to conduct themselves in a professional environment, a sense of responsibility and how to manage their own money.”
