Bristol Cathedral Marks Centenary Of WWI With A Series Of Events
Bristol Cathedral will be hosting a series of events to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
The programme will run from 05 September to 19 November and will include exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and special services.
Photography exhibition At the Going Down of the Sun, has started already and features four years of photographs taken of Commonwealth, civilian, enemy war graves, war memorials and bomb sites across the Bristol and Bath area.
The Royal British Legion will launch a large installation Poppies on the Green on Saturday 27 October at 11am, which members of the public will be able to contribute to.
Abel Gance’s 1919 silent war film, J’Accuse, will be screened to live organ accompaniment on Thursday 01 November.
Families and children aged ten years upwards will also be able to come and listen to the real-life experiences of 32 former pupils of St John’s in Bristol on Saturday 03 November.
And, the Bristol Festival of Remembrance will bring together orchestral pieces, choral works, readings and compered by Terry Waite CBE on Saturday 10 November.
Leo Jamelli’s Sleeping Soldier installation will be projected onto the Abbey Gatehouse adjacent to the Cathedral at dusk on the eve of Remembrance Sunday.
Bell ringers, pipers, buglers and trumpeters across the country will be marking the centenary of the ending of the First World War, paying tribute to the millions that lost their lives at dawn on Remembrance Sunday, followed by the procession to the Cenotaph at 10am for a service to start at 11am.
The Cathedral Choir will sing Durufle’s Requiem at 5.30pm, followed by the bells of Bristol Cathedral Ringing Out for Peace at 7pm.
