Bristol Families with Empty Room Urged to Consider Foster Caring

Bristol Foster Care:

Bristol families are being urged to consider providing homes for foster children, as their older children move on to university this autumn.

According to independent social enterprise organisation Five Rivers Child Care, there is a shortfall of 480 foster carers in the South West and more than 8000 across the UK.

The organisation is hoping that parents of the 38,580 students in the region who may have moved on the university will considering using the spare room to offer temporary respite or even long-term foster care to vulnerable children.

Spokesperson for Five Rivers Child Care, Johan Strydom said: “While potential long-term foster carers are crucial to supporting the thousands of children in care across the UK, the industry is underpinned by those offering emergency and respite foster care, whether it’s to cover a foster family over a weekend or to care for a child in an emergency situation in the middle of the night. Being an emergency foster carer or short-term foster carer offers career flexibility as well as unlimited training opportunities.”

The requirement for being a foster carer is having a spare room for each foster child and being over the age of 21 years.

Single people, co-habiting couples, same sex couples and even those living in rented accommodation are able to be foster carers.

People from all walks of life can become foster carers as long as they are over 21 years of age, including single people, co-habiting couples, same sex couples and people living in rented accommodation are all eligible, the only requirement is a spare room for each foster child.
