Second hand has rapidly become the way to go when it comes to buying for a new baby. Bargains from boot sales, eBay and charity shops have become so popular that the term ‘secondhand’ has even been re-branded to – pre-loved.

The pre-loved revolution has now hit  Knowle. A local Bristol mother, fed up with not being able to buy things in the area for babies and toddlers has come up with a practically perfect solution.

Katy Westbury has recently launched family run business Practically Perfect at Knowle’s Broadwalk Shopping Centre. The new store sells brand new essentials as well as pre-loved items, solving the needs of those wanting to to get rid of baby and toddler items with those looking to buy.

As the mother of a one year old and a three year old, she knows exactly what it is parents need for their young ones.

There is nothing shabby about her beautifully presented and practical shop. It is home to everything parents of new babies and young toddlers need and cannot buy in the district. The stock contains brand new essentials such as mattresses and new baby wears alongside second hand but perfectly conditioned shoes, clothes, prams and baby carriers.

Shopping partners and toddlers can take a well earned break.

The shop’s contents are ordered into neat sections: travel, new baby, sleep, play, clothes, shoes and gifts.

Brand new stock includes toddler tights, rain covers, cot mattresses, moses basket mattresses, bedding, a full safety range of Clippa Safe and new baby hospital items such as scratch mits and hats.

Those monster sized prams and double buggies can easily move around the racks in this shop. The aisle was tested with a double buggy prior to launch.

The second hand prams stocked must meet British Safety Standards and electrical items have to come boxed with instructions. High chairs, safety gates and buggy boards can all be purchased here and you can guarantee there won’t be bits missing.

Practically Perfect does not stock car seats or toys, but you can get baby play mats, cot mobiles and baby walkers.

It’s lovely to see a full range of boys clothes and shoes equal to the amount of girls. All the clothes – up to age 4 years – are freshly washed, ironed and beautifully presented according to gender and size. There is everything from Primark and George, right through to Ted Baker, Jasper Conran and Dior.

Gorgeous Gifts

There is a distinct lack of giftware for mothers and babies in the local area, but for those precious events – new baby, Christening and birthdays – Katy stocks a healthy range of gorgeous gifts from the Snuggle Gift Collection.

Hand made in the community

Have a teething baby?

Babble Bibs  protect babies’ clothes from that excess dribble, being useful as well as funky.

Katy stocks 90 different designs, so it’s unlikely you will bump into another youngster with the same Babble Bib.

Katy is also keen to involve the talents of the local community, stocking gorgeous hand knitted tops and hand made bunting to order.

Best Foot Forward – New Shoes for Babies and Toddlers

Snuggle Feet Shoes make gorgeous gifts and practical footwear for tots. These soft leather shoes are ideal for protecting the feet of crawling and cruising babies.

And Watching the Pennies – Gently Used Toddler Shoes

Once babies move out of the cruising phase and begin to walk distances out doors, mums quickly find out  how expensive buying shoes can be. Little feet grow very quickly. Some months it will seem shoes are too small before they are barely worn. Gently worn shoes, some still with original shop tags are also snapped up by Katy. For both girls and boys there are sturdy Clarks, party shoes and the all important welly boots.

So how does Practically Perfect work?

Katy has strict rules when it comes to buying stock. All items are sold as seen and must be practically perfect and gently used.

To make the entire operation run like clockwork, parents who are interested in selling items to Katy are asked to phone and make an appointment to view with her.

The shop has a busy turn over of shoppers and browsers. By booking appointments to view, Katy can then dedicate time to her customers and sellers alike.

Katy does not work on a commission basis, but will buy her stock out right from parents. This leads to a win – win solution all round.

If you are local and have large quantities or large items Katy can come to pick them up in her van

There is no need to buy new

While you can still pick up big bargains at car boot sales, there is a very obvious advantage to Practically Perfect. Whilst you could visit cold wet boot sales week in and week out until you find what you need, you can walk into the warm, well ordered shop and pick out exactly what you want.

There is no bun fight to get out of Whitchurch here, but a shopping centre with free parking for up to 500 cars. Even the door to the shop is practically perfect, as it stays open as you push your pram in and out.

So you think you may have an item to sell to Katy?

Firstly, phone up to arrange a viewing appointment or to leave your details.

Items are viewed by appointment only.

Items must be practically perfect or gently used.

Whilst baby walkers and play mats are accepted, toys are not.

Electrical items must be boxed with instructions and prams carry British Safety Standards.

Practically Perfect and gently used items only

Childminders can get a 10% discount on production of a valid Ofsted card.
