It is now officially gardening season – well according to the supermarket’s seasonal aisles. This new book from the RHS is an ideal starting point to get going in the garden whether involving youngsters for the first time or for learning together as a family.

For novice gardeners there is no worry. This book really does take you back to basics explaining where to start, what you need and why and how to get going.

Photographs work really well here, illustrating the concise to the point information laid out in easy to read paragraphs.

There are lots of different gardening projects for children to do. The Make a Pizza Herb Garden is a good one. This links up the effort of gardening with a final end result. Children can go on to make their own pizza with ‘healthy options’, many of which they can grow in the garden.

As well as growing produce to eat, there are also other creative gardening projects including making a home for birds, make a bird scarers and a bird feeder.

Sally says: “I don’t really know much about gardens and pull up more flowers than weeds I think. George and I are keen to start growing our own veg and we have been tidying up the garden to get going.

“We have found this book informative and a great help. We are working through it together and have been raiding the pound stores for everything we need.

“Having a zero knowledge of gardening hasn’t been a problem because this book has told us everything we need to know. It’s also nice to have the sciency bits for Georgia too.”
