Chopsy Baby is reviewing… Huggies newborn UCC – nappies with Umbilical Cord Cut-out
You don’t tend to see pictures of newborn babies in glossy magazines with a cord stump. This is probably for the same reason cord care comes as a bit of a surprise to new parents and tends to get glossed over in magazines. It’s just a bit icky and doesn’t look good.
When a baby is born, the midwife will clamp the umbilical cord with a plastic clip. This will be done about 4 cm from the baby’s belly button and also at end of the cord next to the placenta. The midwife will cut the cord between the two points, leaving a stump of around 3cm from the baby’s belly button.
During the next week, the umbilical cord – still clamped will dry out and drop off. The belly button will take around another week to heal completely.
To make parents’ lives easier when it comes to cord care, Huggies have launched newborn size one nappies with an umbilical cord cut-out shape. Mothers over the years may have found fitting newborn nappies on babies a struggle when trying accommodate the baby’s cord and clamp. Both tend to be around the top nappy line.
“Cord care is often a surprise to new mums and something they perhaps had not considered until the arrival of their baby,” says midwifery expert Nikki Khan.
Nikki believes the new feature though a simple change, will make a huge difference to new mothers. She says that the cut out will allow the air circulate and prevent infection of the cord.

Katie Althrop and baby Martha
Katie says: “Martha is my first baby so I am still getting to grips with nappies. I have tried a few different brands. Instead of gifts, everyone bought me packs of nappies. Straight away I could see the benefit of having the cord cut out shape. With standard nappies without a cut out, I kept worrying that I would end up ripping off the stump and clip. It is just above the line of the tabs sticking the nappy down. The clip seems to sit at a funny angle too pushing out against the nappy.
“With the Huggies cord cut out, the stump and clip are not covered by the nappy and there is no pressure put against it. When the nappy goes on, the stump and clip are uncovered and sit freely against Martha’s soft cotton vest instead.”
“I have been using Huggies Pure wet wipes too. I know you are only supposed to use cotton wool and water, but try using that when you are not at home. They make an ideal matching pair.”
Best of all…
The cord cut out shape is brilliant for allowing the umbilical cord space and air to heal.
