New Bristol Specialist School Proposals For Every Disability

Bristol City Council is applying for funding to create a new specialist school in Bristol aimed at every disability.

The new school is hoped to open as part of the Government’s ‘new special wave’, which aims to approve up to 60 specialists and AP free schools across England.

The council is proposing to open a school to ‘support the needs of our community’ which has a ‘flexible provision’.

The Local Authority says it will cater for ‘multiple needs’ including: ‘Trauma, Neurodiversity, Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health), Sever Learning Difficulty (SLD) and Cognition & Learning Needs (C&L).’

The location for the specialist would be on the Elmfield Site in the ‘neighbourhood of Southmead, Westbury-on-Trym and Henbury’.

The council says: ‘Through forecasting, Bristol County Council has identified the need for a new special school in the area. Applying to the DfE new special wave will give Bristol County Council the opportunity to fulfil this demand and ensure children with SEND in our community have access to high quality support and appropriate guidance to help reach their full potential.

‘Local data suggests the need for a 164-place school providing specialist provision for children with neurodiversity, communication needs, sensory processing and cognition and learning needs. We anticipate the school will be all through catering to pupils from 4-19 years.’

An Open Engagement Event will be taking place online on Monday 03 October at 5pm. This can only be accessed by emailing: consultation@premieradvisory.co.uk

An online survey is also open until Monday 10 October 2022: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GJPZ2SN
