New Film Aims to Help Professionals Identify Autism in Children

A clever film aiming to increase awareness of the different signs of autism in different children for professional use has just launched

The Birthday Party, follows three different children with autism at a social gathering, and looks at the different ways the condition presents itself.

The training film was made in Wales in a partnership between Cardiff University and Welsh Government.

Co-Director of the Wales Autism Research Centre at Cardiff University, Dr Catherine Jones said: “The signs of autism can often be missed but it is crucial for professionals to recognise them so they can make an appropriate referral for diagnosis and obtain the right support from health, social care and education services.

“We hope that everyone who watches the new versions of our films will be able to better recognise the basic signs of autism and be aware that signs can present in different ways.”

The film has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Latvian and Lithuanian in addition to Welsh and English as part of a European collaboration sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council.

Whilst the film is aimed at professionals, it can be watched online at: www.autismchildsigns.com
