Parents Too Busy to Check Their Children’s Mental Health

Children’s mental health is so often overlooked despite their lives being busy, full of school work and sometimes chaotic.

But according to research from The Mental Health foundation, almost half of British parents never check up on their child’s mental health, with being too busy one of the main reasons cited.

A two thirds of parents worried about the academic pressure placed on their children with the current education system. A two in five also say that schools are putting pupils health at risk by pushing academic performance above all else.

“From an independent study we know that 50 per cent of adult mental health problems are already established by the age of 14, and yet mental health education is still not compulsory at schools,” Dr Antonis Kousoulis from the Mental Health Foundation says.

“It is crucial that we reach young people early and give them the knowledge and skills they will need to understand and protect their mental health in today’s complex world.”

Half of the parents taking part in the research felt their children had a better understanding about mental health discrimination than previous generations. And it’s good news that at least 48 per cent think their child is positive about family members who live with different conditions.
