UK to Recycle Disposable Nappies

THE FIRST INITIATIVE to recycle disposable nappies may get the go-ahead in the UK.

Knowaste, the international provider of technology solutions for absorbent hygiene products has submitted plans to Birmingham council to run this service.

The company have recently run the Nappy Days Survey amongst mums to find out about how they view using nappies.

It revealed that 95 per cent of parents wanted disposable nappies collected as part of the black box recycling scheme.

The survey also found that 43 per cent of parents had wanted to use washable nappies before their child was born but only 12 per cent consistently did so.

Up to 84 per cent of a disposable nappy could potentially be recycled. There are currently no recycling facilities in the UK.

Chief executive of Knowaste, Roy Brown said: “Our survey clearly shows that parents want the choice of being able to recycle disposable nappies – with 86% preferring this to other options such as incineration, composting and landfill.

“This information, direct from the parenting community, demonstrates that recycling options for nappies could be a significant way of helping local authorities reach vital targets.

“If we want to help close the gap in recycling rates compared to other countries in Europe there must be a concerted effort to look at the options available to deal with nappies and other absorbent personal hygiene products, such as incontinence products.”
