Vocational Qualifications back in vogue with parents

Vocational Qualifications are back in fashion with parents who want to protect their kid’s future.

Research by education foundation, Edge, has found that the value of vocational qualifications has increased, with more than four fifths of parents with children age 11-19 years old believing them to be important.

Of these parents, 74 per cent said it would make their child more employable, 40 per cent said they would get a job quicker, 26 per cent said they would earn a better pay packet, and 20 per cent said their child would be more recession proof.

The career prospects that parents favoured for their children included, topping the charts IT, followed by marketing in second place and join third catering and hospitality, and finance and insurance.

The research shows the change in opinion of vocational qualifications, with one in ten parents admitting to being less of an academic snob in the current climate.

Chief Executive of Edge, Andy Powell said: “Parents have traditionally pushed their child down an academic path without taking into account their unique abilities and preferences. Vocational qualifications have been seen as the ‘poor cousin’ of the
education world which is why it is so encouraging that more parents are finally recognising the strength of their ‘career currency’ and the fact that there are many different paths to success including apprenticeships.”
