Parents buy tots as young as two apps to play with

Parents are spending on average more than £48 per year on apps for young children.

In fact, 93 per cent of parents say they use their smartphones and tablets to entertain their youngsters, some as young as two years of age.

The type of apps being downloaded to keep young children quiet include colouring, numbers and spelling apps.

More than 80 per cent of parents taking part in the research for Vodaphone said they were happy for their child to have their own tablet or smartphone by the age of ten years.

Vodaphone has released a new guide to help parents keep their children safe from inappropriate content when using the devices.

A spokesperson for Vodaphone, Libby Pritchard said: “The research shows how much smartphones and tablets have become part of children‘s lives, so the guide has been designed to support parents in this rapidly changing world. Vodafone protects children online because we want families to enjoy all the benefits of mobile technology safely and with total confidence.

“Along with the new Digital Parenting Guide, we know there are a lot of older children and young adults that have their own phones and tablets. That’s why we’ve also re-launched our free Vodafone Guardian app to help parents manage their child’s smartphone providing protection from specific calls, messages and online content.”
