Sleeping Beauty by Sarah Gibb – Review
Our Verdict: This lovely fairy tale princess story is retold with lovely non-Disneyfied illustrations. Hurray.
Our Rating: 10/10
Nothing makes me sigh more when reading children’s stories than seeing much loved stories turned into Disneyfied horrors. Disney Princesses are tolerated in the house but not something to aspire to. Which is why Sarah Gibb’s beautifully illustrated telling of Sleeping Beauty is a breath of fairy tale fresh air.
Sarah has a lovely classic style, creating beautiful characters which though contained in a pink coloured cover will not offend or irritate.
Being the pain in the backside parent that I am, I couldn’t let it go that Sleeping Beauty was woken up with a kiss. “How Rude,” I explained. “We don’t just wander into people’s bedrooms and kiss them. She might not like that.”
Well, apparently she did and the prince and princess married and lived happily ever after so what do I know?
But this children’s fairy tale is lovely and I’ve been asked to buy the Rapunzel and Cinderella version for bedtime reading too.
