Bristol Motorists Face Sunday and Bank Holiday Parking Charges in Bristol City Centre

Motorists in Bristol could be paying more to park in the city, as Bristol City Council proposes changes for city centre parking.

The council proposes to introduce charges for on street parking on Sundays, bank holidays and evening parking in the outer zone of the central parking zone. The changes will apply to all pay and display machines in the Central Parking Zone.

Councillor Mhairi Threlfall, Cabinet Member for Transport believed the parking charges would actually encourage more people to drive to the city centre.

“We expect that introducing these new parking charges would have a number of benefits. Firstly, Sunday parking charges should help to support the local economy by encouraging more people to visit the city centre,” Mhairi said.

By way of explanation, she continued: “Currently many of the parking bays in the area are occupied by the same vehicles all day, which means there are fewer opportunities for visitors to park. The new charges should encourage the turnover of these parking bays and also help to reduce pollution and congestion by encouraging more people to take public transport.”

The council claims that income from the parking charges and any subsequent fines above the cost of operation will be used to improve transport in the city as well as fund things like concessionary bus fares and filling potholes.

People will be able to object to plans by sending a comment until 04 May 2018 to tro.comments@bristol.gov.uk or writing to Highways Service (100 TS) , PO Box 3176, Bristol BS3 9FS.
