Consultation Launched to Protect Pedestrians from Dangerous Cyclists
New Consultation on Laws to Protect Pedestrians from Dangerous Cyclists:
Protecting pedestrians from dangerous cyclists, is one of the features of a new consultation that is open for the next 12 weeks.
It will look at the possibility of introducing a new offence of causing death by careless or dangerous cycling, something which already stands for motorists.
The new consultation will look at a range of road safety laws with a view to updating them to protect both cyclists and pedestrians.
The news will be some relief to Matt Briggs, whose wife Kim was killed by a cyclist in 2016. He is urging people to contribute to the consultation and support the proposed changes to the law.
“I welcome the government’s proposals for new legislation around causing death and serious injury by dangerous and careless cycling,” he said.
“This public consultation is an important step towards updating the arcane laws that are currently being used to prosecute cycling offences.”
In the same of year of Kim’s death, three pedestrians were killed and 108 seriously injured after being involved in collisions with cyclists.
Chopsy Bristol Says: “This is a really welcome consultation. Pavement cycling is a massive bone of contention in Bristol. We ourselves have experienced many near misses from people flying along narrow pavements.
“I’ve also seen many cases of cyclists flying through pedestrians on pavements in Broadmead that have become a cropper when braking hard at the last minute. One man had to be pulled out of the base of a tree on Bond Street. He’d swerved to avoid hitting a baby in a pram because he was going too fast to see them. It’s really dangerous and antisocial to cycling like this and Bristol is full of it.”
