Bristol Secondary School Planning for East Central School Goes to Planning
Bristol Secondary School Planning Application for East Central School to be Heard Next Month
A much-needed secondary school for East Central Bristol will be facing council planners next month. The South Side of Silverthorne Lane development, which falls within the Temple Quarter Enterprise zone, finally goes to Development Control A Committee for consideration.
The complex planning application includes office space, 300 homes, retail and cafe space, student accommodation as well as the 1600 place secondary school.
There is a serious lack of secondary school places for East Central Bristol due to a known population bulge that has moved through the city’s primary schools.
School place planning in Bristol has left a shortfall in secondary places for East Central running into the hundreds. The issue was first identified as a problem by Bristol City Council for September 2019. For that academic year, secondary place allocations saw schools ‘reluctantly’ go over their Published Admission Numbers. The same has also happened for 2020.
School allocations for the academic year starting in September has seen pupils from East Central Bristol being offered school places as far away as Hartcliffe and Withywood.
By September 2021, projected demand for school places will exceed the current admission numbers of local schools by around 200 places.
Whilst the council has a statutory duty to provide school places, some concern still remains within the planning around potential flooding, described it as an issue that ‘remains a challenge’.
BS5 Secondary Education Forum has campaigned hard for the school to go ahead and is now urging local residents to support the planning application which will be heard on Wednesday 05 August.
