Central Bristol Road Changes for Bike Lanes and Bristol Bridge Closes to Traffic
Central Bristol Road Changes for new bike lanes will create road changes in Bristol city centre
Central Bristol Road Changes taking place next month will see new protected bike lanes installed along Park Row, Upper Maudlin Street and Marlborough Street – think bus station, BRI and up to Park Street. The changes are coming as part of Bristol City Council plans to improve cycling safety and social distancing in Bristol.
The new lanes are part of a long-term transformation plan to improve Bristol’s transport network, cut back on pollution and move people out of cars and onto buses, bikes and pedestrianised areas.
Cabinet Member for Transport at Bristol City Council, Cllr Kye Dudd warned there may be a ‘period of disruption’ while the ‘crucial’ changes are implemented.
He said: “These bold measures to divert traffic away from the city centre will make a huge difference to the quality of our air on a key Bristol route that passes our hospitals.
“The new protected bike lanes are part of city-wide transformative measures that will create a more connected future for everyone with cleaner air, safer and better public transport, and improved walking and cycling routes.”
The full list of changes from 03 August will be:
- Traffic lanes on Upper Maudlin Street will reduce from two lanes to one lane in both directions and Marlborough Street will reduce from two eastbound lanes to one
- Suspension of parking bays along Perry Road and Park Row
- Pop up bike lanes along Park Row, Upper Maudlin Street and Marlborough Street, protected from traffic by temporary bollards
- Pop up bike lane installed and traffic reduced from two lanes to one on Lewins Mead from the Christmas St junction to St James Barton roundabout
Further changes will take place in September, altering the St Michael’s Hill junction. This will see a no left turn onto St Michael’s Hill from Perry Road and a no right turn out of St Michael’s Hill onto Perry Road.
Sunday 02 August will also see Bristol Bridge, Baldwin Street and Union Street closed to through traffic as part of a measure to improve air quality and make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to move around the city centre.
