Stop The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill Bristol Protest

Parents came from across the region to protest in Bristol

Families from Bristol and Weston Super Mare, took part in a day of national action against a new bill extending powers of ‘safeguarding and welfare of children.’

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill has sparked concern, particularly in the home education community with what is seen as ‘control’ in place of ‘support’.

Campaign group Stop the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, held a day of rallies across the country, including Bristol.

The group says: “This harmful Bill proposes to restrict academy freedoms, removing autonomy over curriculum, pupil numbers, and recruitment. The Bill shows an inherent distrust of parents to act in their child’s best interests. It instead gives more powers to LA in areas where they have a proven record of failing, such as children with SEND.

“The safety net for parents of withdrawing a child from an unsafe or unsuitable school is in effect removed from the families where this option may be critical to prevent harm. It puts children at higher risk. It is about control, rather than support. It is about surveillance, data gathering and tracking. It leaves children and some families without data privacy, with no effective safeguards. The bill is silent on the child’s voice throughout.

“We believe that prioritising the well-being of our children is essential to create successful adults of the future and children who are happy and thriving in education and in life in the present. This bill moves us in the wrong direction.”
