Council Recruits Bridges Inspector Whilst Pero’s Bridge Collapses In Bristol Harbour

It comes as a pedestrian bridge is causing chaos for Bristol ferries and pedestrians

Bristol City Council is currently recruiting for the position of Bridges and Structures Inspector to work across all of its highway bridges, footbridges, retaining walls, culverts and associated infrastructure.

The person responsible will need to keep Bristol’s ‘spectacular waterfront city on the move, from a maritime and Highway perspective.’

The role, the council says, will ‘suit an individual who has some degree of structural experience…’

It comes as a main pedestrian bridge crossing the harbour caused chaos this week following a hydraulics fail during safety testing.

Pero’s Bridge connects Narrow Quay with Loverose Way, seeing heavy footfall between Queen Square and Millennium Square.

Bristol Community Ferry Boats are also affected. They are currently unable to stop at their City Centre pick up and drop off point because it’s not safe to sail under the bridge. The closed central stop comes right in the middle of the busy summer holiday period.

Bristol Community Ferry Boats says: ‘There is a fault at Pero’s Bridge which means our boats can’t gain access to the City Centre landing stage. Please make your way to the Prince Street Bridge (Arnolfini) landing stage as an alternative. 

‘We look forward to resuming our services at City Centre as soon as possible.’

Bristol City Council says they need someone with either ‘…appropriate structures qualifications or relevant previous experience along with some relevant structure’s asset management experience, to support the Bridges and structures, also including maritime operational moving bridge structures.’

 

No timeline on fixing Pero’s Bridge has so far been announced.

Bristol City Council came under ridicule from residents after on social media that the bridge would be closed – with a photograph of the bridge open and people walking over it.

The council said: ‘ Temporary closure: Pero’s Bridge

‘Pero’s Bridge is currently closed to pedestrians, and boats are unable to pass underneath.

‘If you’re travelling through the area, please use an alternative route. Ferry passengers planning to board at the City Centre landing at Cascade Steps should use an alternative ferry landing.

‘Our engineers are assessing the issue and working to restore normal operation as quickly as possible.

‘Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve the problem. We will provide further updates as soon as they are available.’
