99 per cent of packed lunch boxes are unhealthy

Children’s packed lunches are as unhealthy as ever, according to new research from the University of Leeds.

A study of 1,300 lunch boxes taken to school by children aged 8 and 9, found that crisps, sweets and sugary drinks still ruled over healthier options such as fruit and vegetables.

Just 1.1 per cent or one in every 100 packed lunches met the nutritional standards for school meals.

Most lunches studied contained contraband food and drink such as crisps and cakes.
