New plastic recycling scheme for Bristol kerbsides
Bristol will be starting two new recycling schemes allowing the collection of plastic from the kerbside for the first time.
Starting on Monday 19 April, the first scheme will collect plastic from more than 17,500 homes in the city.
Homes participating the scheme will be allocated a waterproof sack to store plastic waste in.
All plastic bottles and lids, food containers, margarine tubs, fruit punnets and yoghurt tubs will be taken.
Hard plastics including children’s toys, drainpipes, cling films and cellophanes cannot be taken in this scheme.
It is estimated the trials will collect around 774 tonnes of plastic waste a year.
Service Director for Environment & Leisure at Bristol City Council, Tracey Morgan said, “A considerable amount of our household rubbish is made up of mixed plastics, so we are hoping residents taking part in this trial will see a major reduction in their wheelie bin waste.
“We’ll use the results of the trial scheme to inform our new waste contract, which begins next November 2011, and hopefully we will then be able to roll out a cost effective kerbside collection for mixed plastics to all residents in the city.”
