Absolutely No One In Bristol Calls It “Brizzle”

The infuriating term is on the wall in M Shed

M Shed might want to get its house in order somewhat. The museum says it is ‘all about Bristol’ but is failing to get the basics right about the city’s very own accent.

No one from Bristol calls the city Brizzle. The only people who call Bristol Brizzle are not from Bristol.

The infuriating term is used in signage describing features of the local accent and asking ‘What other ‘Brizzle’ do you know?’

None actually, because it doesn’t exist.

The generally accepted guides to the Bristolian accent are considered to be Vinny Green and Harry Stoke – co-authors of book A Dictionary of Bristle.

Bristolian author Dirk Robinson is another local source for the city and its distinctive accent.

M Shed’s Brizzle board seems riddled with danger. As well as mangling our local accent, it’s also been slapped with a danger warning: ‘sorry this is not in use for your own safety.’
