Babies lose measles immunity

The importance of youngsters being vaccinated against measles has been further emphasized by new research published on the BMJ website today.

Babies between the ages of two and twelve months were found to have low protection against measles.

A drop in the level of antibodies babies take from their mother lowers over time, leaving them vulnerable to the illness until they are vaccinated.

The research led by by Elke Leuridan from the University of Antwerp, Belgium recommends early vaccination during an outbreak or contact with older siblings catching measles.
