Baby sebamed skin care products offer unique pH balance to protect skin

When your baby is first born, you are advised to steer clear of using any kind of products on their highly sensitive skin.

A newborn baby’s under developed skin is prone to irritation, dryness and allergies because it has not yet developed its protective layer – the acid mantle.

The advice to bath a baby every night to encourage good nightly routines, takes its toll on their skin and is being blamed for the meteoric rise in early years eczema.

Topping and tailing to keep babies fresh and hygienic through the early days and weeks is a better approach than a full scale bath.

Mums who remain faithful to the advice on rejecting baby toiletries quickly realise that though they are probably doing their best for their baby, it only takes a great big milky poo to leave unpleasant lingering odours.

A new range of baby care products has just been launched to try and combat the parental dilemma of protecting a baby’s fresh new skin, verses the need to actually wash dirty bottoms.

Baby sebamed is a ‘soap free’ complete range of care products with a pH balance of 5.5.

It is designed with the specific aim of helping to develop the skin’s protective acid mantle.

Because the skin has a slightly acidic pH value, soap products which do not have the same level can weaken it. This is what leads to irritation and infection.

Sebamed matches the pH level of healthy skin, to help maintain its natural hydro lipid barrier.

The sebamed range was created back in the 60s by Dr. Heinz Maurer, to allow people with skin problems to wash their skin without causing irritation. The extended range includes products for adults as well as a new range for babies.

Active ingredients include almond oil, shea butter, allantoin and panthanol soothe.

Weston-Super-Mare mother Tina Rodgers, tests out Baby sebamed products for Chopsy Baby on four week old Harvey.

Baby sebamed Children’s Shampoo
£3.99 for 150ml
This shampoo, suitable for use from birth, is 100 per cent soap and alkali free. Containing the herbal extract of chamomile, it is recommended for use in cases of atopic eczema and psoriasis.

Tina says: “I wasn’t too sure about sebamed to begin with as I had never heard of the brand. I did some research on the internet and was surprised to find it went back such a long way. I do try not to overuse bath products on Harvey because my first baby had such trouble with eczema. The shampoo has a nice fresh, creamy smell to it and I’m tempted to use it myself. It’s quite economical too as you only need to use a really tiny bit at a time.”

Baby sebamed Baby Cream extra soft
£2.69 for 50ml
This extra soft cream is designed to form a protective film against dryness. It is suitable for use on the face as well as the body.

Tina says: “It’s nice to use a baby cream that actually is soft as so many of them can be difficult to apply. This cream isn’t thick and soaks right into skin instead of clogging it up on the surface drying it out. It’s good for all around family use as I found myself using it on patches of dry skin on my older daughter. We all have really sensitive skin in our family and this was a really nice product to use. It didn’t cause us any problems.”

Baby sebamed Diaper Rash Cream

£5.59 for 100ml
Forming a protective barrier against the causes of nappy rash, this diaper rash cream is for use during nappy changes.

Tina says: “Harvey doesn’t get nappy rash at all, but what he does get is a bit of redness where the nappy sometimes chaffes on the top of his thighs. He also gets some sore patches around his neck as he can’t hold his head up and it gets a bit moist or milky. I have been using this cream to protect these areas. Again, this cream absorbs into the skin instead of having to rub it in quite firmly which is not good in tiny babies.”

Sebamed’s skincare experts have the following tips to help you care for your baby’s skin:

Bath your baby only twice a week, as daily bathing is not recommended until the crawling age.

You can bath your baby before the navel has healed as long as the navel is gently and thoroughly dried afterwards.

Use a wash cloth, as sponges have elevated risk of bacterial and fungal contamination.
Limit baths to 5 to 10 minutes and keep at a temperature of 37 – 37.5°C.

After bathing immediately cover your baby with a towel, pat dry and clothe.

Use suitable skin cleansing products for babies to reduce the irritating and dehydrating potential of cleansing products.

Avoid traditional soaps as they can dry out and irritate baby skin by disturbing the acid mantle.

Baby sebamed and other products from the sebamed range are available from a wide range of independent and online pharmacies, including Harrods Pharmacy, London and www.chemistdirect.co.uk
