Boots solve fishy problem

Getting the right level of vitamins and minerals into your kids can be difficult if they are fussy eaters. No matter how much you plan and prepare food representing all the correct food groups, if they won’t eat it there is no supernanny in the world that can persuade them otherwise.

The Food Standards Agency recommends eating two portions of fish each week. One of these portions should be an oily fish such as Sardines or salmon. Not eating this amount means some people may be deficient in omega-3.

There are different types of omega-3, each with different benefits. The ones found in the oily fish are the fats that are good for joints, heart disease and the development of brain tissue in babies.

Whilst to meet the recommended allowance only two portions of fish need to be consumed, this can be tricky if fish is not your dish of the day.

No parent ever wants to consider the use of supplements, but Omega-3 is a long trusted formula containing the Omega-3 fatty acids which may help maintain healthy brain development.

We tested out the Smart Omega 3, Strawberry Liquid for children age 6 month to 12 years from Boots.

The Boots children’s vitamins range has been packaged to appeal to children featuring fun cartoon characters. Whilst this may dispel any fear children may have of taking medicine or supplements, parents should be wary about encouraging its consumption.

We tried the supplement out on four children aged 9 months, 2 years, 4 years and 6 years. All children took the supplements off a spoon with no fuss or grimacing.

Four year old Amy said: “I liked the flavour of it but it tasted of banana not strawberry.”

Six year old Ellie said: “I will take it. My dad says it helps me to concentrate at school.”

Boots nutritionist Vicky Pennington said: “We would always recommend that a healthy, balanced diet is the best way for both adults and children to get their vitamins and minerals. However this can be difficult, especially when it comes to children who may turn their noses up at the sight of green veg or a piece of oily fish.

“Encouraging your children to take a multivitamin supplement can be one step along the way to maintaining their overall health, if they don’t have an adequate intake from their diet.”
