Bristol City Centre Developments to Change the Face of the Central Area
Bristol residents are being asked to contribute to the future development of Bristol City Centre and some of the surrounding areas.
A consultation is currently taking place regarding the City Centre Framework, which is asking for people’s views on a range of proposals. These include housing, cycle routes, pedestrianisation and locations of buildings – which could be ten stories upwards in height, dominating the skyline of Bristol.
The consultation focuses on the Centre, Broadmead, Redcliffe and St Pauls locations. The Framework notes Bristol as being ‘one of the UK’s most liveable Cities’. Between 2001 and 2014, the population of the centre doubled to 30,500, with the majority of those aged between 18 and 24 years.
The Council notes that the centre is home to a diverse range of communities which was originally business in nature. However, in recent years it has developed into residential pockets and large student communities.
Despite the centre being ‘prosperous’ and containing ‘the major shopping area’ Bristol City Council does note that parts of it suffers from ‘high levels of deprivation, especially to the East’.
Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, Cllr Mhairi Threlfall said: “The face of Bristol’s city centre has changed dramatically over the years and to ensure it continues to be successful we need to be proactively shaping future transport changes and development. There are many demands for the space which need to be balanced, so that the space meets the needs for all the different people living, working and visiting the city. We look forward to hearing people’s views on our ideas.”
The consultation closes on 14 May 2018.
Pop-up staffed exhibits will be at the following locations to talk about the development:
11am to 2pm on 11 April – St Nicholas Market foyer, Corn Street
2pm to 5pm on 23 April – Citizen Service Point, 100 Temple Street
3.30pm to 6.30pm 3 May – Central Library foyer, Deanery Road
