Bristol Police Search for Missing Monkey and Ducks

Bristol police hunting a missing monkey and ducks in Bath are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The missing monkey is in fact a tiny jade creature of huge cultural significance and was taken from the Museum of East Asian Art in Bennett Street Bath.

As well as the monkey, thieves also took jade mandarin ducks with lotus flowers, an inlaid wooden covered box, a soapstone figure of Dongfang Shuo, a set of 14 gold belt plaques and a Jizhou stoneware vase.

Museum Curator, Nicole Chiang said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the burglary as we are preparing for our 25th anniversary celebrations. Not only do the stolen objects have significant historical and cultural value, they also hold irreplaceable emotional value for our founder.”

Some witnesses have already come forward having seen four masked men breaking into the museum through a first floor window at 1.20am on Tuesday 17 April before making off in a dark-coloured SUV.

Police were at the crime scene within five minutes of the call, and an investigation is underway.

“Due to the items stolen and the speed of the burglary we suspect this to be a targeted attack with the artefacts possibly stolen to order,” DS Matthew Reed said.

“These items range in monetary value, but their cultural significance is priceless.

“I’d like to thank members of the public who have assisted us so far and ask anyone else who can help our enquiries to get in touch.”

Police Say: Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken to officers, or who has any other information which could help, is asked to get in touch online, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5218081649.
