Bristol Residents’ Opportunity to Give Views on Immigration Detention
Bristol residents will have the opportunity to share their views and find out more about immigration detention in the UK with a new visiting installation.
The Channel, is a creative project from artist Isobel Tarr, which will be visiting three locations in Bristol.
The project was developed with Right to Remain to raise awareness of people at risk of detention in the city simply for having the incorrect immigration papers.
It has been supported by Bristol Cultural Investment Fund and the Lush Charity Pot and has partnered with Borderlands to run follow-up workshops.
The Channel will be visiting The New Room in Broadmead first. People will be able to step inside the phone booth and hear messages from people who have been locked up.
A 30,000 people are indefinitely locked up each year in the UK for not having the correct papers. They are taken from cities across the country, including from Bristol.
The project will be at The New Room between 15 and 16 of September. On the 17 and 18 September the phone booth moves to College Green, then on 19 and 20 September it will be at the Junction 3 library in Easton.
“People are being invited to listen, ask a question, offer an answer, share a thought, a feeling, a memory or an idea,” Kate Rogers, Community Engagement Officer for the New Room says.
“The phone box offers an uncomplicated way for people to find out more about issues that affect detainees in the UK – the only country in Europe to detain people who have committed no crime, with no time limit.
“The project also gives us the chance to meet other people in our community who want to create an alternative to a hostile immigration system, and will enable people to consider jointly what could be done to make that possible.”
