Bristol’s schools need governors

Local people are needed to help raise standards in Bristol schools by becoming a governor.

Bristol City Council is working with national charity, School Governors’ One-Stop Shop, to recruit more than 100 new school governors across the city.

The role of a governor helps to manage the direction of a school, including school policies, recruitment and budgets.

Governing bodies are made up of a mixture of school staff, parents and local people, they don’t even need to have children themselves.

Bristol’s Governance and Leadership Adviser, Ian Caskie, said that governors need only be aged over 18, interested in their local community and able to commit to two – four meetings every term.

He said: “The key to a successful governing body is a commitment to securing the very best outcomes for every child at the school. Everybody has something to contribute, whatever their age, gender, background or experience.
