Chopsy Baby is Reviewing: Angel Cat Sugar

Yuko Shimizu is to popular culture as Louis Wain was to art. Both are creators of iconic cat imagery, with Yuko being the original character creator of global brand Hello Kitty.

Now, the UK is beginning to embrace the Japanese designer’s 2003 creation Angel Cat Sugar. Already popular with sleb’s children, the quiet and friendly puss with the magical power to heal is tipped to take Top Cat status, competing with Hello Kitty for the global domination of youngster’s bedrooms worldwide.

Now for parents who just aren’t sure what the fuss is all about, both Hello Kitty and Angel Cat Sugar are perfect popular culture icons bridging the awkward age between childhood and teen years.

But typically, thanks to the quirks of Japanese graphic design, Hello Kitty and Angel Cat Sugar also bridge an alternative gap from teens to adulthood, allowing it to be embraced by grown-ups too.

There is something special about the range of Angel Cat Sugar merchandise. At first glance the prices can be a little bit of an eye-opener for the unaware parent. But, the products themselves are actually really good quality. The stitching is super- sturdy, the fabric hard wearing and products will stand up to the use and abuse of both children at play and teens bashing purses in and out of bags.

The second point to be made about the merchandise is that though it comes in pink, it does not seem to cause the same offence as the usual pink toys aimed at tots and little girls. Yes the character does wear a little crown, yes it is a bit cutesy, but not offensively so. This is about style and kitsch not princesses, Bratz or Barbie.

The Mini Pink Shopper can look so good hanging off of a pram. It could house your own handbag essentials, or a stock of nappies and wet wipes or the strange and special collection of oddities young children love to drag around with them. It’s strong, well made and the handles are properly stitched on. Absolutely no bits of plastic to drop off or crack and break. £14

For teens, the Purse Bag will happily carry a small purse, mobile phone and other bits and bobs for an essential night out. The strap is long enough for adults so children using it should be monitored. It is definitely not suitable for under threes. Again the purse has the same style and quality as the Pink Shopper. Ideal for girls aged six – eight years. £15

The Soft Toy Keyring will be perfectly placed on the zip of school bag. It’s hand wash only for the little white cat, ours clutching a pink flower. Again, the toy is good quality and we think suitable for children aged from four years upwards. £10

Best of all…
The products are actually really good quality. This is not pound shop tat and will last through plenty of day-to-day play and use.
