Getting kids familiar with cooking and nutrition is essential to stop more and more generations reaching for nuggets, chips and ding-ding food.

Now is a great time of year to start improving nutrition. The first two weeks of January are too hard to take resolutions seriously. After a winter bloat out during the Christmas and New Year’s excess, going cold turkey back to healthy again on 01 of January is doomed to failure.

Now we are back into the swing of routine again, setting children up with an accessible children’s cookery programme such as Annabel’s Kitchen can get the whole family into enjoying simple and wholesome food.

Annabel Karmel is extending her reach from parents to children in this warm, chirpy cookery series featuring children and two penguin puppets.

Set inside a kitchen loft, Annabel – along with children helping – whip up quick and nutritious meals inside each ten minute episode.

The programmes feel a little staged with the practically perfect Karmel taking centre stage. In fact, they almost make the CBeebies series I Can Cook with Katy Ashworth look like a rowdy raucous affair.

Whilst I Can Cook is aimed at the under sixes, Annabel’s Kitchen bridges the gap from the fives to elevens with the more advanced way of preparing dishes, yet still featuring the fun of puppetry to appeal to younger children.

Best of all…
It’s quick, concise with some colourful fun for the younger viewers.

Could improve…
It would be nice to see Annabel relax a little more.

Basically…
A light-hearted introduction to cookery for primary school children.
