Cotton and Silk skincare is our family favourite
Soothing Baby Salve
A really nice alternative to the popular Sudocreme. It gives the baby’s bum a natural barrier when changing nappies. It smells nice and feels nice on your hands too, and you won’t struggle to rub this into and off skin.
Kid’s Cleanser
This is a great product. You pop some of this lotion onto a cotton wool pad and wipe it over a dirty, sticky messy baby face. Any type of residue comes off quickly and gently. It is much easier and faster than using a flannel, and better for your child’s skin than a chemical wet wipe.
Baby Moisturising Lotion
A truly gentle cream that is perfect for you and your baby. We used this lotion in place of prescribed eczema cream for both adult and baby and found it just as effective.
Baby Body and Hair Wash
This did not have a scent to it at all and is a really nice baby body wash. Either apply it directly to a baby’s skin with a soft flannel, or for really small babies just add a quantity to the baby’s bathwater.
What Chopsy Baby loved most about this skincare range is that all of them are gentle enough to use as part of your own daily skincare regime. The cleanser lifts off grease and grime without leaving any soreness. The Baby Moisturising Lotion is then a good facial moisturising cream did not have any stinging sensations. Hell, we even tried out some of the Soothing Baby Salve on cracked winter lips though we probably shouldn’t.
Amy Anderson is a 34-year old mum of two to Rufus, 6, and Vincent, 4, from the Isle of Wight. She took the Cotton and Silk skin care range on holiday with her.
This winter has been particularly cold and so I have been taking a lot of precautions about the boys’ skin, but we just went to the Austrian Alps for New Year to visit friends and the temperature was a bone chilling minus 20 degrees c. I’d been told by my friend that it was going to be seriously cold and I was really worried about the boy’s skin because I know mountain air not only means extreme cold, but also very low humidity which is a nightmare for eczema-prone skin.
I hate using any sort of steroids on the boy’s skin as they are so young and so I am always on the look out for natural alternatives. I do use E45, but it is very thick to apply and the boys hate having it put on and its effectiveness is often a bit disappointing.
I heard about Skin Shop’s new Cotton & Silk kid’s skincare range for children with dry skin via a colleague at work. I wanted to get the kid’s skin prepared for our trip to the mountains as I’ve learned that good eczema management is all about preparation, so I thought I’d order some in advance of our trip and give it a go.
I began using the wash in the bath and putting the moisturiser on straight away afterwards about ten days before we left to go skiing. It was really easy to use, smelt pleasant and the boys didn’t mind it being put on at all, which was an encouraging start. They were such nice products that I used them on myself too as the whole range is formulated for skin prone to eczema and dryness.
My friend’s warnings were not wrong and we arrived to seriously cold weather. After the first day on the slopes the boys’ skin was wind-lashed, red and irritated and they were a bit distressed. I put them in the bath with the wash and then smothered them in the Cotton & Silk moisturiser from head to foot, put them in their seamless cotton pj’s and cotton socks to prevent any chaffing of their skin from their bedclothes and then I put a bowel of water in their bedroom overnight to try and increase the humidity in the room.
The next day, after applying sun cream, I smothered the boys’ cheeks with the Cotton & Silk baby salve. It is meant for baby’s bottoms but can also be used on patches of very dry skin or as a skin protection barrier. In the evening their skin was definitely less red, less dry and less irritated than the previous day and they were much happier. I removed both the sun cream and the salve using the special kid’s cream cleanser that comes with the skincare range, which was amazing because the whole lot came off with a couple of swipes with a cotton pad and there were no tears or tantrums about having their faces scrubbed clean with a flannel, which can be really uncomfortable if you have already got dry sensitive skin. I have now begun using the cleanser myself for exactly the same reason!
I continued with this same careful skincare routine every day while we were away and the results were fantastic. The boys’ skin remained calm and they came back with no dryness or irritation. The salve was the most amazing product because it stayed on the skin all day and provided a complete protection again the drying cold. I also put it on the kid’s lips, my cheeks and lips and my husband’s and I put it on all of our skin’s on the plane home too and we all avoided getting that awful dry flaky skin you often get after skiing holidays or after being on a plane. I was also very impressed with the kid’s cleanser as it made cleaning the boys’ faces so easy and didn’t irritate their highly sensitive skin after a day out in the cold weather. I will never wash their faces with a flannel again.
By the middle of the week’s skiing holiday, several of the other parents staying at the chalet were having dryness and chapping problems with their children’s skins too due to the extreme cold and so I was smothering the salve every day onto several sore little faces. Luckily the pot was massive and so there was enough to go round!
I would definitely recommend this skincare range to any parent with children or babies who have skin prone to sensitivity, dryness or eczema or whose children’s skins are suffering as a result of the biting cold weather we are having at the moment.
