Family Day Out Near Bristol – Brean and Berrow
Berrow and Brean are two beautiful beaches stretching between the imposing Brean Down and Burnham-on-Sea. They are ideal places, not just for days out, but for also for spending a week. There are plenty of campsites, amusements and facilities to accommodate all. But best of all is the basic nature of the beach itself. It’s bordered by sand dunes and has no annoying commercial seafront. The cheap beach shops, pubs and cafes are there, but do not impose their wares, leaving the beauty of the beach to sell itself.
The great thing about camping rather than visiting for the day is that you get to experience the beach at its best. Early in the morning it’s deserted save for the occasional dog walker, meaning you get total peace and quiet. In the evening, you can sit back and watch the incredible sunsets change the colours of the sea and sky.
On clear days you can see the shoreline of Wales as well as the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm.
Care does need to be taken. Despite people’s best efforts to sink themselves in the dangerous mud exposed at low tides, some areas of the beach are patrolled by lifeguards. And, though cars are allowed to park on the beach when the tide is out, if beach patrol is announcing that people have five minutes to move their cars or lose their cars to the sea, they really do mean it.
