Forget prejudice and check out Bristol schools

Bristol parents are being urged to ditch their prejudice and take a look around the city’s secondary schools before making applications.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Clare Campion-Smith, said: “Bristol schools celebrated their best ever GCSE results this summer.
Improvements in attainment across the city are rapid and sustained and we have the capacity to continue to improve further. We are in the fortunate position of having completed rebuilding and refurbishment work at all our secondary schools, so teaching facilities are second to none.   More students are already coming to us with a 12 per cent rise last year of students entering year seven.

“I urge parents not to rely on the historic reputation of schools when making their decision about which schools to apply for. They should take a look for themselves at how things have changed.”

The deadline for secondary applications is Sunday 31 October 2010 with most schools offering open days or evenings.

The majority of secondary school open evenings are taking place over the next fortnight. For full details, go to www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions
