Hair today, gone post-natally

During pregnancy many women notice the condition of their hair vastly improves, looking thicker and healthier and growing faster. This generally comes with the ‘blooming’ stage of pregnancy and can be attributed to hormones.

Post-natally it is a different story. The excess hair may drop out very quickly and new hair will grow at a normal, slower rate. This is then coupled with the strain of trying to get your body back to shape, coping with a newborn, no sleep and stress, stress, stress.

It is then no surprise that one in three women will suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives. This post-natal boiling point is one of the most likely times. This can be a really distressing thing to happen, knocking your ego at a time when you are feeling most vulnerable.

GP, naturopath and medical author Dr Deborah McManners said: “During pregnancy the hormone progesterone increases, keeping hair growing for longer but as soon as a women gives birth, her progesterone levels decrease causing the hair that should have fallen out during the last nine months to do so all at once. It can be a devastating experience but the good news is that nutritional approaches can be used to support natural re-growth”
